In a house full of kids, in can be hard to find time to relax and be alone, even just for a while. Some parents think that craving some time for yourself is being selfish; that’s not the case at all. Having some alone time gives you a chance to rejuvenate your mind, body and spirit, and ultimately become better at what you are and what you’re doing.
But again, finding a place to just tune out can be a challenge. Fortunately, a few design fixes in your bathroom can fix the problem and give you a place to soothe your tired mind and body.
Cold tiles and harsh lighting will do nothing to get you relaxed. Consider adding some soft lighting wired to a different switch when you need to have some downtime. You can then have the choice of bright lighting, if you’re in for a quick shower or to use the mirror. You would then have the choice of soft, dim lights if you want a nice luxurious bath. You can even go all out and light candles instead of using electric bulbs for a total relaxing effect.
A few added elements in the room can also make a huge difference. Instead of a plastic laundry hamper, opt for a fabric-lined basket for your dirty clothes. Use natural fabrics and muted tones for your towels and bathroom mats. If you can go for a total bathroom overhaul, consider re-tiling your bathroom from harsh white tiles to softer tones and earthy textures. Install a simple desktop water fountain on your bathroom counter, and an aromatherapy jar with your favorite essential oils to take care of your hearing and smelling relaxation experience.
You don’t have to go very far in order to rejuvenate and unwind after a long day of work. Your very own bathroom can be turned into your personal retreat area.
The guest bathroom, or the powder room, is usually reserved for guests and visitors to your home. With a little bit of thought and some creativity, you can turn an otherwise simple space into a welcoming nook that will make your guests feel welcome and special.
The guest bathroom is the perfect place to fit in any orphaned furniture in your home. You can put a small lamp, a chair, even a small side table to highlight the room and make the space just a little bit unique. On the table you can set a few magazines down, and maybe a bowl of candy. An old-fashioned lighting fixture is also a good idea to add character to a bathroom and give your guests something to talk about.
By the sink, a nice touch would be to put some vials of scented lotion or cologne for your guests to use. Instead of the usual regular bars of soap, have little decorated soap squares or liquid hand soap in an attractive pump bottle. Some people would leave a hand towel on a rack or a pack of disposable hand napkins. Instead of these usual additions, you could leave a basket of small individually folded towels so that your visitors will get a fresh towel every time. Have a separate identical basket beside it for the used towels.
Guest bathrooms are not just about how they look, but also how they smell. Veer away from bathroom fresheners and instead put out an aromatherapy-heating jar. Add a few drops of your favorite scented oil and your guest bathroom will not only look like a haven, but smell like one as well. With soft and warm lighting, all these elements will come together to have a guest bathroom that has a welcoming vibe and ready for visitors.
